Do Psychometric and Behavioural Analysis Tools Really Work?

Yes!! Here is a link to a recent study into one such tool called 'DiSC': Everything DiSC - Insights to Action

The study claims a c.90% reliability on retests and that can be improved even further by a correct introduction. It is the old adage of 'garbage in, garbage out'. If assessees follow the instructions and answer honestly, they can generate an immense amount of useful information to inform leadership and team dynamics. For this reason, I normally like to spend some time with clients prior to undertaking the assessments to explain that there are no right or wrong answers, only different, and that a key to being a good leader or team member is to flex behaviours to improve relationships on the basis of the information gleaned.

They can also be helpful as a part of the recruitment process, though it must be remembered that they are not designed to measure competence, e.g., someone may be very task-focussed and be highly motivated by reaching targets, but that does not mean that he/she will necessarily possess the means of properly achieving those targets.

In brief, psychometric and behavioural analysis tools can provide very useful information to help build effective leaders and teams: Aspire MCL uses SDI2.0, DiSC, The 5 Behaviours and Belbin Team Roles to help leaders and teams better understand and act on each others' motivations, preferred behaviours, conflict triggers and responses, etc. We all have preferred ways of behaving, but being aware of others' perspectives will help us to modify our behaviour in order to boost relationship intelligence (RQ) and work better with them.
